In Pictures: £2.3 million restoration project at historic landmark in Boston now complete

A 300 year-old historic building in Boston is set to re-open following completion of a £2.3 million restoration project.

Fydell House has undergone a year of extensive repairs and redecoration to restore it to its “former glory”.

A spokesperson for Boston Preservation Trust, which owns the site, said the project has seen the “sympathetic restoration of the house, married carefully with modernisation”.

"Fydell House will stand proud again in the heart of Boston’s cultural quarter, reflecting its former glory while cementing its place in the future and in the hearts of Boston.”

Major repairs have been carried out to the roof, which was covered with scaffolding for several weeks. In addition there has been extensive electrical work, new heating, a new kitchen, redecoration inside and out, and new information boards.

The three-storey town house, which stands next to Boston Guildhall in South Street, was originally built for wealthy merchants. Owned for many years by the Fydell family, it has been described as “the grandest house in town”. Saved from demolition in the 1930s by Boston Preservation Trust, it was used as a college until 2003. Today is is a community venue, hosting various public and private events.

“The project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other kind benefactors, without whose generosity none of the work would have been possible,” the spokesperson adds. “And today, a year exactly since he gave up the keys, they are back in the hands of Martin Fairman, chair of the charity that owns Fydell House.”

Mr Fairman said: “We are delighted to be back in Fydell House, which I know means so much to our volunteers and the people of Boston. But for now there’s a little more for us to do so we can fully re-open this remarkable building.

“We want to make every visit to the House truly memorable. That’s why we have been working hard to bring the house to life, with information boards, displays and furnishings that reveal its long history, help tell its many stories and uncover its secrets.

“Alongside this our gardeners have been busy putting the garden, a hidden oasis, back in tip top condition.”

He added: “Our new kitchen also means we can support weddings, room hire and other events to a higher level that before. And we’re also delighted to say our tea room will be open once again very soon – we know the people of Boston have missed it over the last year. With modern, high speed wifi across the house, Fydell House will be the ideal place for a business meeting in truly inspiring surroundings.”

Fydell House re-opens to the public over the weekend of 18 and 19 July, with a series of pre-launch events beforehand.
