Here are five photographs retrieved from the Standard’s archives of that part of town as it was in 1985, roughly this time of year.
1.
The familiar sights of Coneys (or Coneys Tailors Ltd), Wilcox & Carter, and Cammacks – all still based at the same locations.
2.
The Bargate Green Car Park.
3.
Wilko at its former site.
There, it can be seen trading under its old name, Wilkinson. Today, it is based at the Pescod Square Shopping Centre, which at this point, was still about 20 years away from opening.
4.
Here we find Oxfam, had operated from the same spot until recently; Lunn Poly, which would become Thomson about 20 years later and then Tui – the current occupant of the unit; and Thrifty, offering ‘clothes for the family’, now a branch of The Co-operative Food.
