World Book Day was still in its infancy when these photographs were taken at schools in and around Boston 20 years ago.

The annual celebration of the written word was launched five years earlier, in 1995. The gallery here has photographs from Boston West School, Staniland Primary School, in Boston, Stickney Primary School, and Swineshead St Mary’s Primary School.

Boston West School held a number of activities to celebrate World Book Day 20 years ago.

As well as reading, the youngsters brought their favourite fictional characters to life with the help of face paints and costumes.

J. M. Barrie inspired a number of efforts, with several children paying tribute to Peter Pan and its rich mix of characters.

4.
But children were happy to look further afield for costume ideas.
