NOSTALGIA: Barbara the steam tractor takes on spectators at Carrington in 1971

When Barbara the Aveling and Porter steam tractor appeared at the eighth annual Traction Engine Rally, at Carrington Park, in 1971 she was 50 years old – now this photograph is too!

A scene from the eighth annual Traction Engine Rally in 1971.

The 1921 vehicle can be seen taking part in a tug-of-war competition against a team of spectators.

In the end, Barbara lost as her wheels failed to get a grip in the damp turf.

Almost 40 engines, steam rollers, tractors and ploughing engines were brought to the show from far and wide.

Other attractions included steam organs, vintage cars and cycles, a fun fair and the smallest cattle in the world.
