Those who walked past Boston’s Odeon Cinema this week in 1965 would have noticed, instead of the usual film titles on the canopy, there was just one word – ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’.

The 14-syllable expression was at that time tripping off the tongue of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins. It took two members of staff to put up the sign and consumed all the letters in the Odeon’s stock room.
