Alpha-bet on a '˜unique' show

Get ready to be spell-bound as an exhibition based on the alphabet opens at Sleaford's National Centre for Craft and Design (NCCD) this week.

Alphabet Aerobics runs at the Carre Street venue from this Saturday until Sunday, June 5.

Devised by Swedish-Chilean artist Anton Alvarez, it aims to re-define the role of the artist in the creative process.

Alvarez has developed a machine especially for the NCCD which sees clay extruded through shapes of letters he has designed.

Visitors will be able to see the daily creation of a new sculpture, each unique in form, size, and aesthetic, with no intervention from the artist.

A spokesman for NCCD said: “The exhibition will challenge the viewer’s preconceptions of making, ceramics, craft, and design by treading the line of conceptual art and craft.

“The installation will offer an exciting and unique opportunity to witness the creation and exhibition of works at the same time.”

Visitors can learn more about Alphabet Aerobics directly from the artist, who will be travelling from his studio in Stockholm, in Sweden, to the NCCD for a free event on Saturday at 11am.

The NCCD is open 10am to 5pm daily.
