Are you the voice for the cathedral choir?

Girls and boys aged between seven and 13 can be part of the choir, which continues a choral tradition dating back almost 500 years.

The choir regularly sings for services, and also appears on radio, television and recordings, and undertakes international tours.

The cathedral recently extended the opportunity to children from schools in and around Lincoln, providing the chance for young people of all backgrounds to be a chorister.

Jeffrey Makinson, the cathedral’s assistant director of music, said: “Being a chorister is about much more than just being able to sing, though that is a major part.

“Regular singing is a great education, builds confidence, nurtures team working and, above all, is good fun.

“We’re not looking for brilliant musicians - that comes with time and practice.

“But we’d love to hear children who can hold a tune, and who are excited by the possibility of being part of a famous choir.”

The girls and boys of the choir sing alternate services, coming together for large events, such as Christmas and Easter, and for concerts, broadcasts and tours.

Rev Canon Dr Mark Hocknull, Chancellor of Lincoln, added: “We are immensely proud of the musical tradition at Lincoln Cathedral, and we are delighted that we can offer an exciting and fulfilling experience and a safe environment for local young people to thrive and to develop skills that will serve them well into adulthood.”

In recent years, the choir has toured the USA, France and the Netherlands, and regularly produces commercial recordings and broadcasts live on national radio.

Auditions will be held in the cathedral at a date to suit prospective choristers.
