SMG Europe has teamed up with celebrity chef Colin McGurran, and his restaurant Winteringham Fields, to bring together a family-friendly event which will help educate and entertain people from across the region. The event will take place between 11am and 4pm and entry is free.
There will be around 30 stalls with food and beverage suppliers from around the region attending and Colin McGurran will be on hand to judge competitions, take part in demonstrations and answer questions from the audience in the venue’s auditorium.
Local businesses attending the event include The Pink Pig, Uncle Henrys, Red Hill Farm, Mr Huda, Yorkshire Chillies from Haxby, Jamaican Delight from Leeds and Scunthorpe Bee Keepers Society, who will be bringing live bee hives on the day. Crunchy Critters from Derby will be bringing edible insects, while the Spotted Dog Flower Company from Blyton will be doing a talk on edible flowers and how they can be used in the kitchen. There will also be fudge makers, chocolatiers, macaroons, preserves and chutneys, sweets, fruit liqueurs and cupcakes. Roe’s Dairy Farm will be attending with their vintage ice cream trailer.
There will also be a culinary kids zone, where staff will encourage young people to get their hands messy in a creative way.
A spokesman said: “With hands on cookery workshops and chances to make and taste food, our chefs will be testing the children’s knowledge on food and teaching them about cooking and all about the ingredients that go into making each dish. Ruth from Wooden Spoon and Whisk Ltd will be making soups and smoothies with the children and teaching them about fun and healthy eating, as well as teaching safe chopping techniques and kitchen skills.”
There will also be a Plum Bread competition and, in an ode to BBC’s Saturday Kitchen, the venue will be encouraging people to make an edible omelette on The Baths Hall’s stage as quickly as possible.
The spokesman added: “Whether they are young or old, male or female, visitors will learn about food and drink, as well as enjoy the tastes, smells and sounds. We want to show off the science behind sausages, the brains behind bread and the craft behind cupcakes.”
