Cheesy comedy bound for Worksop’s Acorn

YOu might be forgiven for thinking there is a severe rodent infestation at Worksop’s Acorn Theatre if you’ve seen the posters for its forthcoming production.

But fear not - they are just advertising the Dukeries Theatre Group’s latest production Big Bad Mouse - set to take to the stage for three nights next week.

Having recently performed an award-winning drama courtesy of Arthur Miller, the company are now luring audiences with a big hunk of cheesy comedy set in the office of Chunkibix Ltd.

There is, it Mr Price-Hargreaves who gives the orders and Mr Bloome obeys them.

Unti, that is, Mr Bloome is accused of chasing a young female across Wandsworth Common - making him the hero of every woman and girl in the office, not least Miss Spencer.

Is little Mr Bloome truly the super-hero of these ladies’ dreams?

The production was originally a huge success for Jimmy Edwards and Eric Sykes in the 60’s.

The show toured nationally and then settled down to a sell-out, extended, three-year West End run, this time with Roy Castle stepping in for the incapacitated Sykes.

It is said that by the end of the run the script bore little resemblance to the original, thanks to the antics of the cast.

Play director Donna Arnold said she hopes her characters will manage to avoid such breaches of copyright when the show comes to town next week.

“There’s a timelessness about this play which I’m sure will still appeal to present day audiences and we hope to present the characters in all their stereotypical glory,” she said.
