Youngsters at Tedder School, in Ashby de la Launde, spent last week learning all about healthy eating – with staff dressing for the occasion in giant fruit costumes.

As part of the week’s events, the pupils enjoyed a ‘big breakfast’ on Thursday with the whole school sitting down to enjoy healthy food, served by staff.

Headteacher Alison Cranshaw said: “Nothing is more important than giving the children the best possible start in life, and teaching them how to make healthy choices will be a lifelong skill.”

All week the pupils learned about varying aspects of health and wellbeing, trying different foods and becoming more active.

And it seems the week’s activities had a positive affect, with pupils reporting changes to their eating habits.

Comments by the pupils included:

l “I hadn’t tried bagels before but they were yummy” – Lucy, aged six.

l “Because of healthy week I now like apples” – William, seven.

l “My favourite food was the fruit and yoghurt” – Milly, eight.

l “I enjoyed eating couscous, seeded bread, breakfast and yoghurt. I loved the day, in fact I was sad when the day ended” – Daniel, nine.

l “I liked the plain yoghurt and apple. I tried pea pods”– Tamzin, seven.

l “I loved the breakfast in the hall because it was a chance to try new foods. I liked the dry rice. All the food looked nice, I thought the yoghurt was sour” – Zach, seven.

l “I really enjoyed healthy schools week because I got to drink milk again” – Sean, seven.
