We’re lovin’ it as Sleaford fast food restaurant staff help community larder

When a shift manager at a Sleaford fast food outlet felt the need to support others less fortunate affected by the pandemic, her colleagues did not let her down.

Ellen Watson, who has worked at the Holdingham McDonald’s restaurant for over six years, saw families and individuals were being affected by the financial impact of coronavirus restrictions, while she was able to keep earning.

She felt compelled to act in whatever way she could, organising a collection of goods for the Sleaford New Life Community Larder food bank. Now Ellen has just delivered a second car load of food and gifts with more to come.

Ellen, 24, said: “There are so many people who are struggling at the moment and the crew feel very lucky to still have jobs and be making money. I know some families who rely on food banks and it is so important to help in some way. Sleaford is a small town and everyone knows everyone, so it’s vital we look after each other and help ensure that no one goes hungry.

“Within three days the crew room was quickly filled to overflowing with generous donations from the team, it was quite overwhelming and I’d like to think we’ll keep doing this as long as the community needs us.”

Ellen said staff have been amazing: “The first time I could barely fit it all in my car.”

Staff now want to bring in Christmas gifts.

Martin Cuthbert, Sleaford McDonald’s Franchisee, said: “We pride ourselves on being a good neighbour to the community of Sleaford and I am proud that so many of our team got involved to support Ellen.”

Rod Munro from the food bank said: “It is humbling to see people from the local community stepping forward to support those in need during the current crisis. It’s going to be a difficult winter for many people in our area and we are thankful that local businesses are supporting local people in need.”

He added: “Our stocks are recovering. But we are now concentrating on supporting families during the Christmas period.”
