Talking newspaper set to launch online version of service

A charity that helps bring local news to blind and visually impaired people in the Sleaford area is set to launch a new, online service in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Sleaford and District Talking Newspaper for the Blind has not been able to operate since mid-March due to the outbreak.

The charity felt that the gathering of members for the recording of material and the copying and distribution of memory sticks by post presented too many risks for volunteers and listeners.

When it became clear restrictions relating to Covid-19 would last for many months, it began looking for alternative means of communications. It found The British Wireless for the Blind charity, which has a website onto which talking newspapers can upload recordings.

“This was of great interest to us,” said chairman Howard Sanders, “provided our listeners had access to the internet. This was an unknown and we were doubtful as a majority of our listeners were of an age where internet usages is not so commonplace. So we did a survey and found that between a third to a half were internet savvy. This response justified progressing the idea.

“We set about testing our equipment, only to find that after such a long lay-off, our computer had decided to ‘retire’. But, thanks to the generosity of Sleaford Round Table, a replacement was soon provided. We were ready to trial the new system which we felt we could operate safely with just minimal volunteers, and which would at least get us back in touch with some of our listeners. Alas, the week we intended to do our first recording coincided with the lockdown announcement!”

The plans, as such, are currently on hold, but ready to progress when restrictions allow. The charity says it recognises the web recordings will not suit everyone, but says it will be ‘delighted’ if it is able to improve its service to blind and visually impaired.
