The venue is encouraging young people throughout the region to get involved with classical music with a special concert on Saturday 6th April, alongside school visits and discounted tickets to the International Concert Season.

The City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra and the South Yorkshire Chorus bring their spring concert to the Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall performing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, The Choral.

Led by Christopher Gayford, the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra is a charitable organisation which gives hundreds of players, whose ages range from 13 to 21 years, the opportunity to rehearse and perform in an orchestra.

Having performed for the City Hall’s 80th Birthday on the exact day the building opened 80 years ago in 1932, the orchestra are familiar with the stage and the prestigious venue.

Joining the City of Sheffield Youth Orchestra is the South Yorkshire Chorus with soloists: soprano Andrea Ryder, mezzo soprano Imogen Garner, tenor David Watkins Holmes and bass Jon Openshaw all making an appearance. Richard Hunter, Sheffield International Venues (SIV) manager of the City Hall said he is particularly interested in encouraging such initiatives.

“Despite opinion to the contrary there are many young people with a great interest in Classical music either listening to it, playing it, or both,” he said.

“At the City Hall we are completely committed to encouraging and helping develop this interest amongst young people.”

He added: “We recognise the need to nurture the talent of the future and whenever possible will support with any resources we have the work of organisations such as the CSYO and Sheffield HUBS who work to open up the diverse world of music to young people across all social strata.”

“To further encourage young people to discover classical music a new ticket price was also introduced at the start of the International Concert Season 2012/13, where all students and young people can pre-book a ticket for only £5. That’s cheaper than a cinema ticket!”

The programme for the forthcoming Sheffield International Concert Season 2013/2014 which starts in Spetember, will be announced at the Hallé concert on 20th April at the City Hall.

Tickets for the 7.30pm show on Saturday 6th April are priced £12 adults, £10 concessions, £4 under 18s and students.
