200 pledge their support for more Syrian refugees

Over 100 people turned out at St James’ to hold up hearts with the names of over 200 local people who are ready to welcome refugees, with 79 people also making specific pledges to teach English, offer days out, cook meals, and 
many other activities.

The event was organised by the newly-formed East Lindsey Area of Sanctuary, with the support of the Churches Together Louth District Syrian Refugee Support Group. It is part of a larger campaign by CitizensUK to welcome 
Syrian refugees to the UK.

Speakers at the vigil included Rev Nick Brown, who spoke about his recent trip to a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan, and paediatric nurse Abi Gilbert, who discussed 
her volunteer trip to Lesvos.

Heather Luna, coordinator of the East Lindsey Area of Sanctuary, said she was “thrilled” with the turn out.

Heather added: “We hope this showing of support for refugees will help the county make the correct and compassionate decision 
to welcome refugees.”

East Lindsey Area of Sanctuary hopes that Lincolnshire County Council will commit to welcoming more Syrian refugees under a resettlement scheme - although the council has already said that it does 
not intend to do so.
