5,000 Bassetlaw families to face Council Tax benefit cuts

AROUND 5,000 of Bassetlaw’s poorest families are set to lose vital cash support as up to £1m is slashed in Council Tax benefits funding.

Families on low incomes will be expected to pay up to £200 a year extra from April 2013 as part of the Government’s welfare shake up.

Pensioners, however, will be protected - although the cuts are expected to place great pressure on the authority.

Bassetlaw Council will launch an official consultation on 29th August on the plan to reduce tax benefit payments by 20 per cent for all working-age claimants.

Council leader Simon Greaves said the government cuts were ‘abhorrent’ and would affect the poorest families in Bassetlaw.
