71-home extra care development in Thorne proposed

Residents in Thorne are being invited to have their say on proposals for an affordable housing development for older people.

Housing & Care 21 wants to build the new 71-home extra care development on land on Church Street near the Peel Hill Motte and is inviting residents to have their say at a consultation event from 1pm to 6pm on Monday, January 25.

Detailed plans will be available to view at the event at The Vermuyden Centre, on Fieldside where representatives from Housing & Care 21, Doncaster Council and architect Langtry Langton will be on hand to answer any questions.

Subject to planning permission work on the scheme, which would consist of 71 self-contained one and two bedroom apartments with a care team on site 24 hours a day, would begin in the summer and be completed by early 2018.

Housing & Care 21 already has three extra care schemes in the borough: Charles Court in Armthorpe, Rokeby Gardens in Kirk Sandall and Swallowdale in Edlington. The schemes combine independent living with care on-site and feature communal facilities like restaurants and salons which are open to the public.

Clare Hemming, property development manager at Housing & Care 21, said: “We’re keen to engage with the local community and are inviting local residents to drop in to view the plans for the proposed development and have a say at what is a key stage of these proposals.

“It is a chance for anyone in the area to have a look at the plans and give their views before final plans are put forward.

“We’re working very closely with Doncaster Council with a view to bringing forward our fourth extra care scheme in the borough.

“These sites give older people the independence of having their own home with the peace of mind that care and support are on-site should they need it.”
