Academy a leader in world of sport

ASTON Academy had cause to celebrate last week when its long tradition of training sports leaders was recognised.

Aston students have achieved Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications and have been recognised as having had a ‘significant and positive impact’ on their community in relation to sport.

And last Wednesday the academy became the first school in Yorkshire and Humber to become a Sports Leader UK Leadership Academy.

Members of staff from the PE Faculty at Aston said they were ‘delighted’ to be receiving such recognition.

A spokesman for the school said: “We are delighted that the achievements, dedication, commitment and hard work of so many students is being acknowledged.”

Sports Leader UK said they were particularly impressed with the ‘excellent links’ that have been forged between Aston and many special schools in Rotherham and Sheffield – with Aston Sports Leader students being heavily involved in leading fully inclusive sports events.

The work carried out with local primary schools was also cited as a key element in the success of the Sports Leader programme adopted at Aston.

The presentation event at the academy last week was attended by school governors, academy PE and other staff and a number of representatives from Sports Leader UK, including the English National Manager David Savidge.

The spokesman added: “The academy was delighted to receive a plaque giving details of the accolade along with the knowledge that as a Sports Leader UK Leadership Academy Aston will be showcased across the country as a model of best practice to which other schools should aspire.”

Originally founded 30 years ago, Sports Leaders UK was set up to support people across the country who would like to give back to their local community.

It now assists over 150,000 young people a year to give them the skills, advice and confidence to provide sporting opportunities to their neighbourhood.
