Affair row led to ban

A NEWLY-WED Creswell teenager was caught drink-driving after hearing ‘bombshell’ news that his wife was having an affair, a court heard.

The offence took place in Duke Street, Creswell, on 17th June - just eight days after 19-year-old James Gaskin got married.

Police on patrol at 3.55am saw a Ford Transit van reverse out of a side road and apparently collide with a parked car. They followed as it sped on to Duchess Street and flashing lights on the police vehicle were activated - but Gaskin did not stop. He was arrested and went on to give a reading of 81mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath - more than double the limit.

Gaskin, now of The Hawthorns, Mexborough, admitted drink-driving and was ordered to do 120 hours unpaid work, with £85 costs and handed a 20-month road ban.

“He went to a local pub and when he got home his wife dropped a bombshell and confessed she was having an affair with another man,” said Phil Bloore, for Gaskin. “This reduced him to an emotional wreck and he felt that if he didn’t leave the house he would assault her.”
