Alex all ready for herbig Marathon mission

A Horncastle woman will have every incentive to complete the London Marathon on Sunday as she looks to raise funds for a friend who died after an asthma attack at the age of 11.

Alex Jowett, 19, has taken on the challenge because Damian passed away after having the attack in 2003,

She has already raised over £2,200 for Asthma UK, the leading asthma charity for the 1 in 11 people living in the UK who suffer from the condition.

Alex said: “I’ll be running for Damian. Since he died, my family and friends have completed skydives to raise money for the charity.

“I feel that it is now my turn to step up to the plate and take up the challenge and raise some much needed funds for a charity that is close to my heart.

“I have always been interested in running and when I was younger, I competed a lot in cross country and road races.

“My studies overtook my passion to run but I’ve always wanted to get back into it and thought there would be no better way than setting the London Marathon as a goal.”

Alex has been pounding the pavements and clocking up the miles in training.

She added: “My training has gone well, I‘ve just caught a cold, but I’m not letting it be an excuse!

“I have two other big fundraisers coming up, including a pie and peas supper night with a raffle and quiz, and the other is a night of live music with up and coming artists.

“I feel proud to be making a difference to people living with asthma in the UK.

“It will be a great feeling to be cheered on by my friends and family.”

Asthma UK funds world-leading research to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for the condition. Research shows that two thirds of asthma deaths are preventable.

Kerry Johns, Head of Events and Community Fundraising at Asthma UK, said: “Every ten seconds someone has a potentially life-threatening asthma attack in the UK which is why we fund research to help develop new treatments and ultimately a cure.

“We are solely funded by public donations, so we simply wouldn’t be able to continue our work without people like Alex and our team of runners taking part in the marathon.”
