‘Amazing’ Emily’s 105th birthday

AN ‘INSPIRING’ Gainsborough woman is still going strong as she celebrates her 105th birthday this week.

Emily Wharton was born in Blyton in 1906 where she lived until she was 104-years-old.

She has two sons, two grandchildren and recently welcomed her great-granddaughter into the world.

Now, she lives in Redcote Nursing Home in Lea, Gainsborough, where over 40 people came along to her party to celebrate Emily’s long and colourful life.

“I still like to keep active,” she said. “I think my mind is probably too active! My son John thinks I talk too much.”

Emily has gained quite a reputation for her energy and outspoken nature.

When asked about the Queen, she replied: “She’s alright I suppose.”

“I wouldn’t want her life. She has plenty of money, but that doesn’t really matter to me. I suppose she’s done OK at keeping her young ones in order - well, except for Charles.”

Emily grew up as the daughter of undertaker John Addleshaw and also used to work at Parkinson’s Greengrocer’s on Silver Street.

“My father always used to say that if you always speak the truth, then you won’t have to tell as many lies to get out of trouble, and I’ve always lived my life by that.”

“I remember quite a lot, and I’d love nothing more than to sit in the Market Place on a Tuesday or Saturday and catch up with all of my old mates. A lot of the ones that are left are surprised that I’m still alive.”

But, cheeky as ever, Emily says she still has plenty of life in her yet.

“Cliff Bradley the funeral director walked into my birthday party and I turned to him and said ‘I’m not ready for you yet!’”

Emily added: “I don’t really think about my age - it’s just life and I try to enjoy it and do as much as I can.

Jane Green said that it was always a pleasure to work at Redcote and see Emily every day.

“She’s just ace,” said Jane. “Emily is so open but realistic and always speaks her mind. - she’s really with it.”

“It’s lovely to have her here. She gets on really well with everyone - but she still does as she likes and doesn’t listen to us!”

Jane continued: “She’s very lively for her age and she doesn’t ail anything - she’s amazing.”

“Emily is one of a kind and there really is no one like her and that’s a fact.”

She added: “We’d all like to wish her a very Happy Birthday with many more happy years to come.”
