The 20-strong volunteer group has worked with rights of way officers from Rotherham Council to outline schemes each month throughout the year to help the authority keep their path network and parklands in excellent order.

Future schemes during the year include reinstating the historic line of a public footpath at Anston Stones Wood, dry-stone walling, and planting trees at the new ‘access for all’ route linking Rother Valley Country Park and Aston.

Coun Gerald Smith, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration and development, thanked the volunteers for their planning and enthusiasm.

He said: “We have a long and fruitful relationship with groups such as the Ramblers Association and others who access our local countryside. In pressing financial times, we do our best to provide easy and clear access to our network of paths, which stretch for many hundreds of miles.”

“The agreement that officers have reached with our friends in the Ramblers Association is another step to maximising our limited resources to provide the best possible service for local people.”
