Carlton-in-Lindrick and Bassetlaw district councillor Barry Bowles has said that police have always attended and halted vehicles for the last 27 years he has lived in the area.

He said that hundreds of adults and children gather at the memorial at the junction of Church Lane and the A60 to pay their respects every year.

“It was absolute shock to the parish council,” Coun Bowles said.

“We are absolutely appalled.

“It seems to be a disregard for tradition and reverence.”

He added: “We get quite a big gathering for the event and this year with it being the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain I envisage there being more people.

“We only want it for the two minutes silence, we have always had it.”

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said they will be meeting with the Royal British Legion and councillors to discuss ‘traffic management’ plans for Remembrance Day across the county.

“The police no longer have the power to stop traffic except in an emergency,” the spokesman said.

“However, we fully understand the significance of the occasion and will endeavour to come to an agreement with all interested parties to ensure the event can take place safely and with minimal disruption.
