Banned driver jailed

A BANNED driver who reached 80mph in an attempt to shake off a pursuing police car has been jailed for 30 weeks.

Samuel Campbell, 29, ignored the blue flashing lights and siren of the police car after he was spotted driving on Morton Terrace, Gainsborough.

Brenda Whittaker, prosecuting at Lincoln Crown Court, said Campbell turned on to Edward Road and then accelerated away continuing along Spital Terrace and Corringham Road.

Campbell, whose three passengers were urging him to stop, continued at high speed on to Thorndike Way before cutting across a grass verge on to Heapham Road South.

The pursuit continued on to Riseholme Road before Campbell turned in to an industrial estate where he stopped.

After his arrest he told police he had been driving at up to 80mph and said that he had tried to lose the police car.

Alistair Munt, defending, said Campbell has shown remorse for what he did and has already suffered a salutary lesson having been remanded in custody following his arrest.

Campbell, of Morton Terrace, Gainsborough, admitted dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, having no insurance and failing to stop for a police officer on 30th August this year.

He also admitted being in breach of a suspended jail sentence imposed in July this year for drink driving.

The court was told he has nine previous convictions for driving while disqualified.

Recorder Peter Cooke told Campbell: “You are a menace where vehicles are involved and you have been for years.”

“You have a spectacularly irresponsible attitude to driving and the safety and well being of other road users.”
