Bassetlaw: District’s A&E admits it is ‘experiencing pressures’ as waiting times across country hit record high

Waiting times have hit their worst level on record, with A&E’s struggling to meet demands over the Christmas and New Year periods.

David Purdue, chief operating officer for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals, thanked the public for their support and advised them to use emergency services wisely.

He added: “Our emergency department experienced pressures over the Christmas period and continues to be busy, reflecting most other trusts across the country.”

“Many of the patients attending are elderly patients, with complex needs, resulting in an increase in patients being admitted to wards.”

“Our ED staff work extremely hard with teams across the hospital to ensure that these patients go on to receive the right care, by the right team within the hospital, as soon as possible.”

“Sometimes, during busy periods, this means that patients who are not seriously ill may wait longer for the appropriate care.”

“We would like to thank local people for their support during this time by only using our emergency department for serious illness. If you are feeling unwell please choose wisely and seek advice from alternative health services available to you in the community by contact NHS 111, visiting your pharmacist or GP before coming into the Emergency Department.”
