Bassetlaw: Firefighters strikes supported by MP John Mann

John Mann MP has backed firefighters following a four-day strike which began with an on-going dispute with the government over pensions.

Mr Mann said: “The firefighters did not want to strike.”

“They do a difficult, often dangerous job to keep us safe from harm.”

“They have been put in an almost impossible situation by the Government.”

“The Government’s plans will lead to job losses and seriously affect firefighters’ pensions.”

“Worryingly for all of us, firefighters could be forced to continue in an active role until the age of 60 with potentially disastrous consequences.”

“Nobody wants to be carried out of a window by a 60 year-old.”

Steve Bull, vice-chair of Notts Fire Brigades Union, thanked the public for their on-going support during the strikes.

He said:“The public’s support over the four days of the strike has been fantastic.”

“Nottinghamshire FBU members have been solid and every station is supporting the strike.

“This should send a strong message to the Government.”

Firefighters across the country last went on strike on Friday 31st October until Tuesday 4th November as part of the argument over pensions.
