Bassetlaw: Health chief urges people to contact Bassetlaw’s NHS quit smoking service

NHS Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is backing Friday’s World No Tobacco Day by encouraing people to consider the harmful effects of tobacco and to contact the local NHS quit smoking service to help them break the habit.

Bassetlaw has a highly effective NHS Stop Smoking Service that provides effective help, including a weekly support package and nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches or alternative medicine.

Research suggests that people are up to four times more likely to successfully quit smoking if they go to their local NHS Stop Smoking Service for help than if they try to quit using willpower alone.

Around 80,000 people die every year in the UK as a result of tobacco use, including more than 200 in Bassetlaw. On average, a smoker’s life expectancy is reduced by 16 years.

Dr Steve Kell, Chair of NHS Bassetlaw CCG and a local GP, said: “Smoking diseases are one of the biggest killers in Bassetlaw as well as being responsible for causing long-term chronic health problems and early death for a lot of people.”

“Stopping smoking is the route to better health and a better quality of life so I urge Bassetlaw smokers to take that first positive step by contacting our local quit smoking team.”

Smokers can contact the team on 0800 328 8553.
