Bassetlaw is obesity capital

Bassetlaw has been named the fat capital of Britain with more hospital admissions for obesity-related illnesses than anywhere else in the country.

Official figures have revealed that 2,878 per 100,000 people in the region were admitted for health problems arising from extreme weight in 2011/2012.

The figure was almost six times the national average of 502 hospital admissions per 100,000 people for illnesses related to obesity.

They also showed that in total 3,252 people in total in Bassetlaw were admitted for obesity related illnesses - 1,200 males and 2,052 females.

The figures, published by the NHS Information Centre, have worried some organisations while others have urged to treat them with caution.

Notts County Council, now responsible for public health, is currently refreshing the region’s healthy weight strategy.

John Mann MP said the statistics were misleading and created a false picture about Bassetlaw.

But he said more needs to be done to increase health, particularly with middle aged and older people.

He said: “Without a question we need to do more to have a healthier community and I am particularly concerned about diabetes and heart attacks. There is an issue of concern and we need to address that.”

He added: “There needs to be more health awareness with middle aged and older people. I don’t think we have a big problem with children because there is a lot of competitive sport in Bassetlaw but as people get into adulthood things start to drop off in terms of activity.”
