Bassetlaw: Lions golf day will raise funds for the Gurkhas

North Notts’ Lions Club are holding their 35th Annual Charity Golf Day in aid of the Gurkha Welfare Trust at Gainsborough Golf Club.

The event takes place tomorrow (Wednesday, 20th August) and the Lions have announced that Effective Consumable Solutions (ECS) as one of this year’s event’s main sponsors.

This year, the Lions have chosen to support the Gurkha Welfare Trust in view of their bravery and support of UK citizens’ freedom over the past 200 years.

ECS director Chris Fink stated: “We are delighted to be joining forces with the remarkable volunteers of the North Notts Lions, to raise much needed funds for this truly worthwhile cause.”

“The help and lives the Gurkhas gave assisting us and our country warrants our support.”

Gurkha soldiers are an indispensable part of the British Army.

They still adorn their traditional fighting weapon, an 18-inch long curved knife known as the kukri.

Across the two World Wars over 200,000 Gurkhas served with the British Army.

“The Gurkhas are close to my heart as I had the pleasure of working with a regiment of Gurkhas many years ago and they are marked by their graciousness, loyalty and very great courage,” said ECS chief executive Felicity Rabbitte.

“As gentle and shy in daily life as they are fearless and tenacious in battle, they are a dignified people and ideal soldiers.”

Each hole at tomorrow’s event is sponsored, and all money raised will be used for providing sight restoration and clean water supply, for Gurkha communities in certain areas within Nepal.
