Bassetlaw MP attacks council infrastructure plan

MP John Mann has criticised Bassetlaw Council’s plans to introduce a Community Infrastructure Levy on new housing and economic developments in the district.

He said the authority are proposing to introduce a three-tier levy on properties above 150 square metres.

This means developments in Harworth will be charged £5 per square metre, £20 for Worksop and rural West and £55 per square metre for Retford and rural east.

Mr Mann said now is ‘not the time’ for such a levy to be introduced.

“we are in the middle of a double dip recession and need to encourage development. Having a Levy now will put financial barriers in the way and drive any sense of a recovery elsewhere,” he said.

“Now is not the time to disincentive development in this area. These proposals should be put on hold until we are in better economic times.”
