Bassetlaw MP John Mann has publicly stated he will not support any Government policy for military intervention in Syria.

Parliament has been recalled for Thursday when MPs will debate the notion and potentially vote on agreeing to send troops to Syria.

But Mr Mann says the plan is flawed and there is no basis for Britain to be involved.

“I will not be supporting any plan for military intervention, especially when the UN is not backing it,” he said.

“Just because some people think we should be involved, does not make it a basis for actually getting involved.”

“We are not the policemen of the world and it would be ludicrous to suggest otherwise.”

“If it is so important that we intervene in Syria, why are we not doing the same in Africa where many more people have died in warfare in places like the Congo in the last month?”

“This Government is inconsistent with its policies. They talk of a potential threat to the country from Isalmic extremists in Syria but Al Qayeda actually support the people David Cameron wants to back with any military action, so there is no threat to us from Syria at all.”

“So far, I have registered no support at all from the people of Bassetlaw for intervening in Syria, which is quite unlike what happened with Iraq and Afghanistan, when there was support for us to intervene.”

“This time, everyone who has communicated with them feels we should be not be getting involved.

“They say it is not our conflict and nothing to do with us and I agree with them, so I will not back any motion for military intervention.”
