Bassetlaw: People urged to attend exhibition on midwifery at museum

The museum’s costume gallery has been used to recreate a hospital setting and what would have been a midwife’s typical home visit to a mother and her new child, which the museum has christened ‘little Francis’.

Among numerous objects on display are medical instruments, uniforms and medical books that belonged to nurses of Retford Hospital and Victoria Hospital in Worksop. There is also a majestic OSNATH pram that was bought from Swannack’s, Retford, in 1960.

Museum officer, Kasia Wosiak, said: “Child birth is relevant to us all in one way or another and it is interesting and a little scary to think how women in the past coped. “

“We hope that this exhibition will give visitors a valuable insight into the work of midwives during this time.”

 ‘Quick! Call the Midwives’ runs until Saturday 30th May 2015.

Admission to the event is free.

Bassetlaw Museum, Amcott House, can be found on Grove Street, Retford, and is open Monday to Saturday, between 10am and 4.30pm.
