Bassetlaw pupils promote road safety message

PUPILS in Bassetlaw schools are spreading the road safety message tomorrow (Friday) when they celebrate Bright Day.

The day is being organised by junior road safety officers in primary schools across the county and they’ll be encouraging everyone in school – pupils and teachers alike – to get involved by adding something bright and reflective to what they would normally wear to make themselves really stand out.

The idea is to remind everyone how important it is to be seen when out and about near traffic during the dark days of winter.

A junior road safety officer, or JRSO, is a year five or six pupil who is chosen by their school to promote road safety awareness amongst their fellow pupils, as well as parents and staff.

They work with the support of a school staff helper and a member of Notts County Council’s road safety team to plan road safety activities throughout the year that reinforce road safety messages.

“Getting involved in Bright Day is really simple,” said Pam Shaw, the county council’s road safety manager.

“It doesn’t need to be a non-uniform day, our JRSOs will simply be asking people to wear something extra that makes them stand out. It must be bright or reflective. Both would be even better.”

“The JRSOs will be encouraging everyone to get involved – pupils, teachers, other school staff, governors and parents – because everyone needs reminding that wearing something bright is a really bright idea.”

“If we all help ourselves to be seen by traffic, both in the daytime and at night, it will help to keep us safer.”
