Behaviour at Thorne school is ‘outstanding’

Thorne Green Top Primary School was previously visited by the government education watchdog in March 2013 when it was found to require improvement.

Following a further visit in November the school has been rated as a ‘good’ school in all areas, except in behaviour which was deemed ‘outstanding’.

Under the leadership of headteacher Neil Butler the school on Middlebrook Lane, has seen improvement over the past two years.

In his report, inspector Kevin Johnson said: “Some aspects of leadership, such as the school’s work to support the most vulnerable pupils and the work done to engage with parents, are outstanding.

“The leadership and management of teaching and learning by school leaders and governors is highly effective.

“Governors’ responses to issues raised in the previous inspection have been impressive. They have first class knowledge of the school and of their role in driving improvements.

“Pupils’ behaviour and their safety are outstanding. Pupils show excellent attitudes to learning. They are invariably polite and respectful towards others and they feel entirely safe in school. The quality of teaching is good. Some teaching is outstanding.”

To improve further the school needs to raise achievement in writing so more pupils achieve Level 3 at the end of Key Stage 1.

They need to reach at least Level 5 at the end of Key Stage 2 by making sure their expectations are high and writing tasks are sufficiently challenging.

Pupils need help to use the specific vocabulary for different subjects, accurately in their writing.

Feedback from teachers must focus on improving writing across all subjects.
