Big clean at untidy Doncaster gorge

Fifteen members of the community joined forces along the Don Gorge near Sprotbrough Falls.

Their aim was to clear the area of unwanted litter and clear large patches of the extremely invasive weed, Himalayan Balsam.

The initiative was organised as part of Co-operatives Fortnight’s Big Clean operation which had seen numerous “Big Cleans” around the country.

A spokesman said: “A very big thank you is extended to our team of willing volunteers.

“This particular event was sponsored by The Doncaster Co-operative Local Forum team in collaboration with the Don Gorge Community Group.

“The day started in glorious sunshine but unfortunately heavy rain in the afternoon meant that the event finished slightly earlier than expected but not before ten sacks of rubbish had been collected and a great deal of unwanted Balsam cut down.”

Secretary of the Don Gorge Community Group, Liz Reeve, continued: “Anyone who would like to help with trying to get rid of this invasive plant at any time is welcome to pull a bit out as they enjoy a walk in the area of the fish pass - or anywhere else for that matter. Preferably before it gets to the flowering stage when it throws out thousands of seeds. It generally pulls out quite easily and can be left on the ground to rot away.”  

The Big Co-op Clean encourages people to come together to do great things in their communities.
