Big Swing Blitz brings wartime music to life

THE Embassy Theatre in Skegness is set to take a trip down memory lane this weekend when the latest ‘Big Band Blitz’ comes to town.

The Big Swing band will be performing at the Embassy for the seventh year in a row when they perform on Saturday evening (September 17).

And their superb renditions of wartime and Rat Pack swing are set to benefit a good cause - with the muscial extravaganza aiming to raise cash for the Skegness Royal British Legion branch.

“The Big Swing Band will be putting on their biggest show yet and incorporating a parade of standards from Army, Navy and Air Force support groups throughout the county,” said Paula Baldwin, who will be compering the evening.

“Military re-enactors will also be taking part and the audience are invited to dress up too in uniforms and fashions of the war era.

“The seventeen piece Glenn Miller style band will be directed by retired Major Paul Murrell, ex-Director of Music for the British Army.

“As well as tunes by 1940s legends like Miller, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman, there will be Andrews Sisters and Vera Lynn songs sung by Sara Blair Manning and Christine Scott.

“Crooner, Tony Orme, will be adding the Rat Pack touch and dancers , Michael and Julie Spencer, will be showing off their swing jive talents.

“Special guest appearances will be by international Sinatra singer, Gary Grace, plus a nine-piece all girls close harmony group from Nottingham, Lady Luck.

“Local 16-year-old drummer Lewis Knight will also be making his debut with the band, playing a power-packed drumming duet with the band’s drummer, Richard Burrows.

“This show has everything. And to top it all, there will be a special dance floor in front of the stage so the audience can get up and dance if they want to.”
