Bikeability course gets Maltby kids’ wheels turning

It was run by officers from Wentworth Valley Safer Neighbourhood Team.

Eight pupils went to the Lifewise Centre at Hellaby with Police Community Support Officer Diljeet Singh and Police Community Support Supervisor Sean Tulley.

“First they had their bikes checked over for faults or loose parts. And all of the bikes were found to be in good working order,” said a spokesman for South Yorkshire Police.

Then there was an assessment of the students’ ability to ride and control their bikes safely.

The morning session saw them learn the necessary skills, and in the afternoon they went out onto the road.

The spokesman added: “As the children’s confidence increased, they moved on to left and right turns as well as u-turns. The emphasis is always on safety and the instructors ensured the young people understood this.”

Afterwards, the children were given a set of lights donated by Maltby Town Council and other high visibility safety goodies.
