Birches, Bridon and Mattersey in semis

The Nursing Association Cup took centre stage this week in the Gainsborough and District Football League with three of the four second round ties taking place.

BFC Birches and Gainsborough Town Canute Reserves needed extra time to settle theirs during which home team BFC Birches scored what proved to be the winning goal and finally break the spirit of a very determined Canute team.

Both teams gave their all and deserve great credit but it is BFC Birches who advance to the semi-finals after a resolute display.

Bridon AFC, who share a ground with BFC Birches, were drawn at home to Harworth Colliery so they switched their game to Tiln Lane in Retford. This was also a very close contest with the home team just showing the better finishing in front of goal to also book a semi-final spot after a 2-0 win.

Mattersey FC, who have not lost a league game all season, went into their game against Retford Town with confidence high and they always looked the most likely winners.

However, A single goal in Mattersey’s favour in the first half was all that separated the two teams and at only a goal down Retford Town were far from out of the tie. Despite both teams creating more chances in the second half there was just a late goal from Mattersey FC to show for their efforts,

The final place in the semis will be between Haxey FC and Fox and Hounds who meet in a three weeks’ time.
