Bookmakers eyes Market Place property

Bookmakers William Hill has launched a bid to open a shop in a vacant unit in Boston's Market Place ... next door to another bookmakers.

William Hill has applied to Boston Borough Council for a ‘betting (other) premises licence’ in relation to
the former Serenity Hair Designs unit, next door to a Coral bookmakers.

If successful, it would be the fourth bookmakers in the Market Place, with a Ladbrokes shop on the opposite side of the pedestrianised area and another Carol outlet.

A spokesman for the company said: “We can confirm that an application has been made. Should it be successful, we would aim for the premises to be open around June time.

“These applications are often the result of extensive market research and a shop refurb generally costs on average around £250,000 – so certainly not a decision that is taken lightly.

“The opening of a new premises would result in the creation of five new jobs.”

William Hill has a branch in Wide Bargate and this would be unaffected by the venture, the spokesman for the business added.

Other bookmakers already in Boston include another Ladbrokes and a Paddy Power, both in West Street.

Coral appear unfazed by the prospect of having
another bookmakers as a neighbour.

When approached by The Standard, a spokesman for the business said: “Competition in the marketplace is part and parcel of the business we are in and ultimately good for the consumer.”

Representations over the application can be made to the borough council until Tuesday, March 22.
