Boy, nine, injured near school

The nine-year old Redlands Primary School pupil was taken to hospital after he was injured on Trent Street around 8.34am on Monday.

Headteacher Carol Sharpe said the pupil was walking to school when he slipped and his foot fell under the back of a Nissan Navara, which was being driven by a 39-year-old man.

Police took the boy to A&E where he was treated for soft tissue damage to his foot. He returned to school on Wednesday.

Mrs Sharpe reminded parents and motorists to take extra care when passing through the area before and after school.

“We always remind parents to be careful and to park away from the school and walk that extra bit,” she said.

“Wickes have always said parents can park in the bottom car park before and after school.”

Several Worksop Guardian readers have commented on our Facebook site about the incident.

Claire Storey said it was bound to happen sooner or later with several motorists parking on the pavements near the school.

“The school has tried to deal with this - they have had police outside and have sent letters to parents about free parking in Wickes, but still they park right outside school,” she said.

“I think the school should be able to issue fines to people who park there. It would soon stop the problem and the money would go back into the school.”

Neil Rush agreed and said the parking situation needs to change.

“Every non-resident who parks on the road at Redlands should be ashamed of themselves,” he said.

“We have the benefit of off-road parking close to the school , as well as Wickes car park and B&Q. There are no excuses.”
