BREAKING: Maltby Colliery has been demolished

The No3 winding tower at Maltby Colliery was blown up at around 1:15pm on 16th July as locals and ex-miners gathered on hilltops.
Hargreaves Services PLC, owners and operators of Maltby Colliery, have been engaging with specialist contractors since the mine ceased operations in 2012, working to remove a number of the mine’s main buildings and cap the old mine shafts.

A spokesman for Hargreaves Services plc said: “Now that work has been done to cap and seal the shafts there is no longer any need for the tower structure to remain in place.”

A range of safety measures were put in place for the demolition including an exclusion zone to protect workforce and contractors.
There was also a brief closure of the road outside the colliery gates and a security team were in place.
