Bridge work set to start

residents have welcomed the Government’s decision to begin building a bridge at the A1 junctions at Elkesley as early as next year.

The Department of Transport’s announcement will mean a safer way for people to get in and out of the village.

Plans had previously been scrapped but a long campaign by residents made sure the need for a bridge was never forgotten.

Bassetlaw MP John Mann said it has been a ‘long time coming’.

Traffic has got faster since the removal of the roundabouts and it has been getting more and more risky for people getting into and out of the village,” he said.

Around 43,000 vehicles use it through the East Midlands daily, almost a third of them heavy goods vehicles.

Mr Mann added: “Also when traffic on the A1 has been brought to a standstill villagers have had to face the misery of being trapped in the village or have had to deal with delays in order to get back home. The new bridge will bring new freedoms to the people of Elkesley.”
