After months of inactivity, work on clearing the rubble from the site began this week.

And a KFC spokesman confirmed that building work was due to start within the ‘next few days’.

The spokesman said: “We’re pleased to confirm that building work for our new drive-through restaurant in Gainsborough will begin in the next few days.”

“The restaurant will create approximately 40 jobs in the local community, and we look forward to starting work on our new store,” she added.

The news will come as a relief to many in the town who were becoming concerned that the company had abandoned its plans due to a lack of progress at the site.

Back in June the Standard reported that there had been a break in work on the site as one contractor had been employed to demolish the old building, with a second coming in to start the new build.

Artists impressions released earlier in the year show a modern building in KFC’s branded red and white colour scheme.

The drive-through restaurant will be largely glass-fronted on the side facing Roseway - in keeping with the many windows of the face of the cube-like Gainsborough Methodist Church just next door.

It will be on the site of the former Magistrates’ Court, in Roseway off Church Street - bringing back into use the site that has been empty since the court closed in 2008.

Erected in 1975, the former court had attracted anti-social behaviour and vandalism since its closure, becoming known as ‘an eyesore’ among visitors and local residents.

The restaurant is scheduled to be fully completed and open for business by the end of the year.
