Officers from Notts County Council were on hand to talk people through the design vision for the new interchange and answer any questions.

The station, expected to cost in the region of £3.2 million, will be built on the corner of Newcastle Street and Watson Road.

“We had a pretty decent turn out despite the freezing cold weather. Lots of people came to speak to us and see the plans,” said senior project office Tom Boylan.

“Everyone was very positive about the plans. I only spoke to one person who thought it was a waste of money.”

Visitors to the stall, which was set up on the Old Market Square last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, could see detailed maps and architects drawings of the planned station.

“We also had an interactive tour on an electronic tablet which allowed people to feel as if they were walking through the building,” said Tom.

“We managed to engage with some of the younger members of the public using that.”

People also filled out questionnaires and made suggestions about what features would be most important to them.

These will then be worked into the design accordingly.

“We have benefited on this project by the fact we have based the design on the successful new bus station at Retford,” said Tom.

“We have been able to make imporovements on that design based on the feedback we have had from the people who use it, for example we have doubled the number of toilets available.”

“Overall people liked the look of the new station design and seemed quite pleased with the site we have chosen.”

“We also showed them the various other sites that have been considered over the years and explained why they were not suitable.”

“This bus station has been a long time coming for people in Worksop so overall I think people are glad to see we are forging ahead and finally making progress.”

A planning application will be submitted in June.
