A NORTH Anston businesswoman has won a top national award for her work in transforming the British security industry.

Julie Kenny scooped the engineering and manufacturing award at the First Women Awards, for her work as chairman of Hellaby-based Pyronix Ltd.

Her career began with her first job as typist - today she runs the £15million security company, which has developed several world-first products.

Julie is the first female director of the British Security Industry Association, chairman of Yorkshire Forward and was appointed High Sheriff of South Yorkshire in April.

To scoop the First Women of Engineering and Manufacturing Award, Julie beat of competition from Suzanne Flynn, the first female graduate engineering officer in the RAF, and Dawn James, engineering director of Sellafield.

The awards were held at the Grand Connaught Rooms in London on 28th June and more than 500 guests were invited.

Theresa May, Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities, who attended the event, said: “All the winners and nominees are leading the way and I hope these awards will inspire even more women to become pioneers. That’s good for our economy, good for our society, good for women and good for Britain.”

“Women are at the heart of our economic future and making the most of their skills is essential.”
