Cadets day of learning

CADETS from the county’s emergency services attended a special gathering recently.

The South Yorkshire Young Leader’s inter-service day saw cadets from the police, fire and resuce, air force and Army come together for a day of learning, sharing and activities at the Lifwise Centre in Hellaby.

They were joined by distinguished guests including Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for South Yorkshire David Moody and South Yorkshire High Sheriff Julie Kenny, who both agreed to become patrons of the new Young Leaders initiative.

More than 100 cadets, aged between 13 and 19, received talks from specialist police officers including a dog handler, an officer from the mounted department and one who is involved in the Olympic Torch Relay.

They also took part in a number of exercises which developed their team working skills.

David Moody said: “I was delighted to be present at the launch event of the South Yorkshire Young Leaders initiative.”

“In bringing together the five cadet organisations in the county we can make things happen in a big way, and can organise activities that the cadets as separate organisations would not find feasible.”

“I’m delighted to be asked to become a patron along with the High Sheriff, and I’m confident the initiative will go from strength to strength.”

“If that encourages even more people to think about joining one of the cadet units, so much the better.”

South Yorkshire High Sheriff Julie Kenny said: “The enthusiasm and desire to learn amongst the young people at the South Yorkshire Young Leaders’ Day was inspiring and I am thrilled to be associated with such an organisation which develops the young leaders of tomorrow and the Lifewise Centre is a stunning location for this kind of event.”

Stuart Carvell, South Yorkshire Young Leaders coordinator, said: “The day was organised to promote young people in South Yorkshire, further the experiences of our cadets and develop their leadership and team working, giving them the confidence to influence their peers.”
