Call for volunteers tosave Luncheon Club

The club has been serving lunches twice-a-week to elderly and disabled town residents since 1965.

Around 65 people currently attend the lunches, which are held at the community centre.

The service is ‘supported’ by a team of volunteers who cook, serve and wash-up.

However, chair Jean Norman has appealed to the News to help attract more volunteers to keep the club alive.

Apart from help with serving and washing up, the club is also in urgent need of a cook.

The current cook will leave at Easter.

Mrs Norman said: “We really do need more volunteers, otherwise there is a very real danger that we could have to close.

“That’s the last thing we want because the club provides a vital service.

“It’s not just the food but a chance for people to meet and have a chat together.

“New and lasting friendships have been built here.

“The social side is a big part of what we offer and, for some, it is the only chance they have to get out and talk. It’s a lifeline.”

Records show the club started in 1965 and was based at what is now Captain and Cook’s coffee house in Church Lane.

For a time, lunches were also served at Sellwood Gardens before the move to the community centre.

Mrs Norman added: “It has been going a long time and is probably as popular as it has ever been.

“It would be a shame if it had to close but we do need people to come forward.

“We have some loyal and hard working volunteers - but not enough of them.”

Volunteers perform a range of tasks, including helping in the kitchen, serving meals and washing up.

Two course lunches cost just £3 and always feature homemade food. This week’s menu included chicken wrapped in bacon and bread and butter pudding.

Mrs Norman explained: “It’s great value for money.

“There’s also a raffle and it’s a very friendly atmosphere.”
