Charity day is tribute to mum

The Red Lion in Ruskington will be holding its third fun day on Saturday, August 27, from 3pm, with all proceeds going to The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Fiona Castle, widow of the presenter of the BBC’s Record Breakers, who died from the disease, will be attending.

Organised by Susan Edwards and her family, she said Fiona visited last year and was keen to return. She said: “Fiona is again to judge our Red Lion Record Breaker challenges, which this year involve marshmallows, beer mats and underpants.”

There will be live music from Kriz and Sharna and entertainment from Mark Farren and Hooch and magician Brian Hellyer, plus stalls, including Cats Protection Sleaford, a teddy tombola, hook a duck, face painting, soccer shootout and big money bingo. The quiz and bingo start at 8pm.

Susan said she and her family take comfort in organising the event in memory of her mum Betty Kilburn, who lost her fight with lung cancer three months after diagnosis.

The family have also done many sponsored activities, with Susan’s eldest son Glenn recently completing a 69-mile run in 24 hours along Hadrian’s Wall.

New this year is a balloon launch, where people can write a message to a lost loved one attached to a helium balloon for a mass launch at 6.15pm. Admission is £2, £1 for under 16s.
