Charity match captained by One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson set to raise thousands for Bluebell Wood

It was organised as part of Doncaster Rovers legend James Coppinger’s testimonial year. Before the players took to the pitch, five Bluebell Wood families got the chance to meet both Louis and James for a ‘meet and greet’ session.

Louis, a Bluebell Wood patron, said: “I really enjoyed meeting the children and families from Bluebell Wood again and am grateful to all the Doncaster Rovers and One Direction fans who came to cheer us on, there was an amazing atmosphere.”

“Playing in the match was even more inspiring knowing the hospice will receive funds from the ticket price; it’s great knowing that so many people can support Bluebell Wood in this way and help to raise vital funds.”

James Coppinger earlier this month also visited the hospice, which cares for around 200 children a year, and gave Bluebell Wood child Kian Critchley a signed pair of boots. Kian and his family also went the match yesterday.

His dad Tony Critchley said: “Kian’s three passions in life are Bluebell Wood, Doncaster Rovers and his family. It was incredible combining all three – an amazing day.”

Naomi Cheshire, sister of Toni Cheshire, who comes to Bluebell Wood, said: “It has been a lovely day, brilliant to bring everyone together and do something so special.”

Helen Mower, head of fundraising at Bluebell Wood, said: “As well as raising vital funds for Bluebell Wood, Jamie’s support helps to raise awareness of our work.

“Bluebell Wood is genuinely a place filled with love and laughter - helping to create treasured memories for our children with complex medical needs and life shortening conditions.

The hospice provides specialist care and support for more than 200 children and their families, both in the North Anston hospice and in the community. It costs £3m a year to keep Bluebell Wood running as the charity receives less than 10% government funding.

Helen added: “Every penny raised makes a huge positive difference and I’d like to thank Louis and Jamie for their tremendous support.”
