And nearly 20 percent of food brought into homes ends up in a bin costing households up to £700 a year and a further £6.3 million a year in landfill costs for Derbyshire tax-payers.

Coun Dean Collins, cabinet member for highways, transport and infrastructure, said: “No one likes to think they are throwing money down the drain, but on average households waste the equivalent of one in every five bags of food bought − not to mention the additional cost of sending food to landfill.”

“The council needs to cut £157 million from its budget by 2018 and money spent on sending around 63,000 tonnes of food to landfill every year could be better spent on other services.”

“That’s why we’re helping people to get the most out of their groceries, cut their shopping bill and reduce the cost of landfill.”
