The incident took place at a house on on Hickingwood Lane when the victim, an 80 year-old man, was approached by a man who offered to tarmac his driveway,

They agreed a low price at the time, and the man left.

He left a short time after the victim threatened to call the police.

No cash was handed over during the incident.

Police are now asking anyone who may have seen either of the men, or any suspicious vehicles in the area, to contact them.

It is thought the men may have been using a silver or white coloured car, and a flatbed truck.

One of the men is described as being white, around 5ft 11 and of a stocky build.

He had been wearing a high-visibility jacket.

Anyone with information should contact Derbyshire police on 101, the non-emergency number, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Community Safety Inspector Russell Dakin said: “We always advise residents not to trade with people who call at your door unannounced. If you believe you need work doing then get a few quotes first from reputable companies.

“This will help prevent you from paying over the odds for poor quality work, and can also reduce the potential of becoming the victim of other doorstep crimes such as distraction burglary.”

“Please contact us if you have any information about this incident or if you notice anyone acting suspiciously around homes in your neighbourhood.”
